Barry Nicholls is Birmingham born and has always worked based from the city (although he travels every week to see clients in South Wales, makes frequent visits to London, Stoke-on-Trent, Rugby and many other places!)
He qualified as an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1958 and was made a partner only 3 years later in 1961 at Howard Jones and Company, which had its head office in Edmund Street, Birmingham. Barry opened another office in Alcester, Warwickshire in 1967.
Following Howard Jones' premature death, Barry took on further partners in 1969 and opened another "Howard Jones"office in Bristol. Throughout, the company operated all aspects of general accounancy practise with a client base of 400+. Work mainly included taxation, company law, raising capital. In 1984, Barry and his partners merged the business with a national practise and remained a consultant throughout the merger.
Between 1985 and 1992, he was involved more heavily in a number of smaller companies, some with equity participation. Duties included raising capital and re-financing, general accounting organization, budgets and forecasts for trading cash flows, monthly accounts to establish current figures and variation on budgets, and holding board meetngs and discussions on policy.
In 1992, Barry retired for the first time until boredom set in (about 2 weeks!) He opened a brand new practise in Harborne, Birmingham as a Chartered Accountant (Court Oak Road). Starting with a few old acquaintances, Barry built up a new business and new involvements in companies, including taking on directorships and fund raising for personal and commercial loans through a wide range of brokers and lenders.
In 2000, Barry attempted retirement a second time when he merged his 8 year old business with a dynamic local firm, based in Halesowen. Again, he stayed on as a consultant to see the merger through. Once more, he missed working and decided to start up yet again in premises in Wollaston, Stourbridge in 2001, where he is now based and rapidly building business number 3!
In addition to accountancy, in 1969 Barry became Manager and Secretary of a small Birmingham building society which was run entirely from his offices. In 1979, the successful venture merged with the Midshires Building Society, with whom he remained a director until 1985.
Barry lives in Stourbridge with his wife Carol.
